Hi n' Tite

A REALLY good barber will give you a razor shave on the lowest portion of the cut, and the hot foam feels fantastic.

Usually the transition zone tapers or fades from the longer top portion and the close-cut sides and back, but you can also ask the barber to leave a sharp line to mark the boundary, which also makes an extreme cut look even more extreme.

A barber at the San Diego YMCA said the reason they leave some hair near the crown is to cushion the weight of a combat helmet. Cool.

The Horseshoe flattop version of the hight and tight clips the top of the head in a 'flattop' style, with the scalp visible alone the centerline of the head, making a distinctive horsehsoe-shape. Some guys call the exposed scalp a 'landing strip'.

Two men check out their landing strips:

The Recon version exposes even more scalp, with hair well above the crown. The name refers to reconnaissance units of the US Army, Marine Corps and Navy. Occasionally the Recon may be cut short on top to look like a more severe horseshoe flattop.
