MTI campaign covers

An MTI (Military Training Instructor) in the US army, air force or marines wears a campaign hat as a sign and symbol of their position and power (although marines call them 'covers' not hats).

  • US Air Force MTIs (male) wear navy blue hats with a silver Great Seal of the United States within a ring centered on the front. Air Force MTIs who teach new MTIs also wear a black cord around the brim. Top MTIs wear a light blue cord and are sometimes called "Blue Ropes".
  • US army drill sergeants wear an olive drab campaign hat with a golden Great Seal of the United States on a disk centered on the front. (US infantry drill sergeants add a blue disk behind the seal).
  • US Marine Corps drill instructors and primary marksmanship instructors wear campaign covers (they don't call them hats) with a matte-black Eagle, Globe and Anchor centered on the front.
  • Some US Marine Corps officers wear a campaign cover with a matte-black Eagle, Globe and Anchor as well as a scarlet and gold cord around the brim. Generals wear a solid gold cord.
  • US Coast Guard instructors wear navy blue campaign hats with black cord.

Note the covers forward slant: many wearers insist covers must always be worn at an angle. Works for me.
